My qualifications include Diploma of Management, Master of Business Administration, Cert IV Training and Education, Certificate IV Bookkeeping, Certificate IV Accounting and I am also a Registered BAS agent. My personal BAS agent number is 26674008 and Accountability BAS agent number is 80294000.
My Bookkeeping Background
My first introduction to bookkeeping was in 1971 in keeping manual records for my very first business as a lessee bread and milk vendor.
The continuation of this was undergoing full time formal training for 2 months provided by Amoco Australia in preparation for my third business as the lessee of one of their service stations. (Manual accounting processes)
My next venture was into the world of Professional Photography and again keeping my own manual set of accounts. It was in this business I was first introduced to computers, (1980) and then to my first electronic accounting software, (Integrity Accounting). This was made up of modules that were installed separately, General Ledger (Ledger Accounts), Cash Book (Spend and Receive in cash), Debtors (Accounts Receivable Subsidiary Ledgers), Creditors (Accounts Payable Subsidiary Ledgers), Inventory (Inventory Subsidiary ledgers) and Payroll.
If you wanted a complex accounting system, this was it. Each module had to be first set up within itself and then linked back to the General ledger.
It was at this time that I developed a close friendship with a man who was an accountant of the old school. A man who was the chief accountant for a very large grocery chain, Barry and Roberts. This man was an invaluable learning resource for me over the next 24 years spending many hours explaining how accounting processes worked and demonstrating these concepts to me on paper in a manual context. If I could complete each of these steps in a manual environment then I would have no difficulty applying them correctly in an electronic environment where some steps and elements of a transaction can become invisible and not providing the complete picture. I certainly cannot say it was easy, but I did learn very sound bookkeeping and accounting principles that have been invaluable to me over the years. These have allowed me to gain confidence in my own knowledge and skills that have allowed me to teach them in varying degrees and levels to thousands of students over the years that I have been teaching.
I returned to university study in the mid ‘90’s with the view of becoming a business consultant. My passion was for small business operators who seemed to be constantly charged ridiculous and unaffordable rates to secure the assistance of a consultant, but that is another story for another day.
I first completed my Diploma of Management through a very lengthy and in depth RPL process with Victoria University graduating in 1998.
I had by this time enrolled with University of the Sunshine Coast into one of the first online Master Business Administration (MBA) programs to be offered in Australia. At the time I was working 16 hour days over 5 days so attendance to classes was impossible. Again I was incredibly fortunate in that I was under the guidance of some of the most skilled lecturers available. I completed three finance and accounting subjects achieving a Credit, a distinction and a high distinction. I graduated with my Masters degree in 2002, a very proud moment for me considering the very humble formal education of my youth.
In 2000 as a result of the level of success I had achieved in the area of finance, I was invited to teach at the University. Reluctantly and with some considerable persuasion I accepted the role on a part time basis for a year. During this time I became acutely aware of my ability to explain complex finance tasks in an understandable way. As a result I made a decision that I would change my goals from Business Consultant to Lecturer and Teacher in a university environment.
With this new goal in mind I spoke with the university for the purpose of pursuing this goal and received a very positive response. The only condition on this was that I continue my studies through to my PhD. While Dr Boon may have that certain ring to it, I still had another year to go to finish my MBA qualification and this would mean adding another 3 to 4 years study beyond this which was not the most attractive of propositions. At this time it was also suggested to me to look at the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector for a teaching career. The rest is history.
I enrolled into the BSZ40198 Certificate IV Assessment and Workplace Training completing 4 units by RPL in recognition of my year teaching at university and substantially supported by the university and the remaining units by learning and assessment. I graduated with this qualification in 2002 and immediately applied for teaching positions here in Brisbane.
I began teaching accounting, MYOB, MYOB problem solving, Microsoft Office and general business administrative subjects with considerable success.
After 2 years with one Registered Training Organisation (RTO), I began contract training to a variety of RTO’s. In 2008 I dropped all other subjects other than Accounting and Bookkeeping and these then became my sole training focus. This continued through to the beginning of 2010 when I was fully occupied with just two training groups teaching only bookkeeping and accounting.
During this same period of contract training, I developed a training course for university graduates with Bachelor and Masters degrees in accounting, put them through an intensive practical skills training program and placed them into positions within an accounting office.
Also during this period I upgraded my teaching qualification to the then current Training and Assessment (TAA) to insure I remained current with current trends in training.
In 2011, I made the decision to join a single RTO specialising in only Bookkeeping, though this has been expanded now to include some accounting qualifications as well.
I have also in the last year upgraded my teaching qualification to the new standard Training and Education (TAE)
It has long been a dream of mine to provide quality training in an electronic form that is available to some of the more remote parts of Australia along with urban areas. That dream commenced in 2005 with the creation of a PowerPoint presentation that was self-running with audio. The student could move both forward and backwards at will to insure that understanding of each step was achieved. The only problem with this was that it was so time consuming to create and fickle dependant on the system on which it was run. The second problem was the delivery of such a system to students.
Today I have with modern technology the ability to create video productions and deliver them securely via the internet. This has now been tested successfully and I have now commenced production of these training videos. This will take time to develop a broad range of videos and if you have a specific need for a video on a specific topic please send me a message through the Contact us section of this website and I will seriously look at getting that up onto this site as soon as possible.
Thank you for listening to this video or reading this text and I hope you will find these videos useful, inspiring and of value.
